How Brent feeds into the pump price

The local price formula does not use the crude oil price directly. It uses the international price of refined petrol and diesel, in the Mediterranean and Singapore for petrol and the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf for diesel. Those prices usually track Brent, but they can move by more or less than crude when refined products are scarce or plentiful.

Source: composition of the price in Gauteng for 7 October to 3 November 2026, from the media statement released by the Central Energy Fund on behalf of the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources on 2 October 2026.

The Department linked the rise in Brent to continued tension between the United States and Iran, uncertainty over oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, higher shipping costs and falling inventories.

Petrol grades, diesel and related fuels

Diesel and paraffin often react more sharply than petrol. In April 2026 wholesale diesel 500ppm rose by R7.37 per litre in one month, against R3.06 for Petrol 95.

How to use this price information

Brent is a useful early signal, but it is the monthly average of refined product prices and the exchange rate that sets the adjustment. See the petrol price prediction page for the outlook.
