Petrol 93 rose 312 c/l, petrol 95 rose 333 c/l, diesel 500ppm rose 284 c/l, diesel 50ppm rose 324 c/l and illuminating paraffin rose 358 c/l. The previous official prices took effect on 2 September 2026.

Transport adds between 3.9 and 189 cents per litre to the price of petrol, depending on the pricing zone. For Gauteng the figure is 91.1 c/l.

Fuel Transport Cost South Africa: current price

The cost of moving fuel from the coast to each area is built into the regulated price as the zone differential. South Africa has 54 pricing zones, each with its own differential.

Inland vs coastal prices

The difference between the Gauteng and coastal differentials, 87.2 c/l, is exactly the gap between inland and coastal pump prices. Petrol 95 costs R30.25 in Gauteng and R29.38 at the coast.

Petrol grades, diesel and related fuels

Petrol and diesel carry the same zone differential. Paraffin’s is higher in Gauteng, and LP gas shows the biggest transport effect: its maximum retail price is R37.81 per kilogram in Gauteng against R34.56 at the coast.

How to use this price information

On a 50-litre tank the Gauteng differential comes to R45.55. Driving to a cheaper zone to save it rarely pays; filling up at the coast before a trip inland does. See inland vs coastal fuel prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much of the petrol price is transport?

In Gauteng, 91.1 c/l, about 3% of the Petrol 95 price.

Why is fuel cheaper at the coast?

Because the zone differential there is only 3.9 c/l.

Does the transport cost change monthly?

No. Zone differentials are reviewed periodically, not every month.
